Our Story
A "small state" coincidence
Take It to the Bridge started in the fall of 2014 as a general business band, founded and led by Greg & Christyn Marcotte, who met in the Rhode Island National Guard in 2009 and married in 2012. The band’s origin stems from a request to provide music for the wedding of their close friends, Jill and Aquila. Determined to exceed expectations, Greg & Christyn assembled a high-caliber group by bringing together Carl and Scott, whom they had met through teaching and performing within the RI music scene. Carl suggested adding Colby, a former bandmate, as lead vocalist. In a twist of fate, Colby had already been separately asked to serve as the Master of Ceremonies for the same wedding. This “small state” coincidence sparked an instant friendship and musical chemistry.
In December 2016, the band invited John, a fellow National Guard member, onstage for a New Year’s Eve show at the Newport Blues Café. His undeniable talent and energy quickly led to his addition to the band, elevating their sound and performance to new heights.
Today, our core group of musicians remains intact, now enhanced by the addition of Josh DeFedele on drums and general management, as well as Sarah Van Pelt on lead vocals. We also collaborate with a network of talented professional musicians from Rhode Island, all united in our mission to foster joy, connection, and celebration through live music.
What about the name?
The band’s name, “Take It to the Bridge,” is inspired by a live recording of James Brown’s hit “Sex Machine.” In music, the “bridge” refers to a contrasting section that heightens the song’s energy and prepares the audience for what’s to come. James Brown famously commands the band and audience alike as he takes them to the bridge, embodying the high-energy, crowd-moving spirit that defines the band.
